Patrick Hennessa, Hennesa, Hennessee - - married Nancy, the sister of Col. John Sudderth. Col. John owned a plantation on the north side of Catawba River. Patrick owned a plantation on the opposite side joining the mouth of Hunting Creek. Together, they ran a toll ferry that connected a public road between the two plantations.

Patrick was the ancestor of many Hennessees later found in Burke County. His wife Nancy moved to North Cove in McDowell County after Patrick's death and is buried there.

When Union General Gillem came to raid Morganton April 17th, 1865, his men stood on the Col. John Sudderth side of the river at Rocky Ford and were shot at by the Morganton Home Guard from the Hennessee side of the river.

Patrick is the only known Hennessee buried in the old Sudderth Family Cemetery now found in the Burke County Landfill and has a readable stone.

"Patrick and Nancy Henessa maintained the plantation left to Patrick by his father John. In 1833, a ferry was established across the Catawba River below the mouth of Johns River at the plantation of Col. John Sudderth on the north side and Patrick Hennessa on the south side. According to the book by Edward W. Phifer, Jr. entitled, "Burke - The History of a North Carolina County", the bond for each ferry was $500. Rates listed for cargo were 75 cents for a wagon and 4 horses, loaded 50 cents for a wagon and 4 horses, empty 37 cents for a wagon or carryall and 2 horses 25 cents for a carryall and 1 horse 12 cents for a man and horse 75 cents for a carriage and 4 horses 25 cents for a gig or sulky. The ferry was still operating in 1846 and was called Sudderth's Ferry."

From his obituary in the Morganton, NC News Herald, 28 May 1903:

"Mr. Manuel Hennessee, a well known citizen of Silver Creek township, died last Friday at the home of his son, Joseph Hennessee, at the ripe age of 77 years, and was buried at Gilboa church on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Mr. Hennessee was a brave Confederate soldier. At the battle of the Wilderness in 1863 he was shot through the head and was carried from the battle field apparently fatally wounded. That he lived so many years afterwards is nothing short of a miracle. However, the wound left him partially deaf and dumb the balance of his life.

Among the deceased's surviving children are Mr. M. N. Hennessee and Dr. E. A. Hennessee of Glen Alpine and Mrs. Horace Kincaid of Silver Creek township. There are, we believe, a couple of sons in the U, S, army. Deceased's wife has been dead a number of years."

You may recall my discounting an earlier report I gave you, that Emanuel Augustus Hennessee I went west in the California gold rush but returned home. Other than from Nelle, I had found nothing to confirm. From what I told you then, you could have zapped it from the file.

Now I have confirmation. I have seen his obituary and a letter to the editor about him after his death. The letter was from a cousin of Nancy Johnson, whom he returned home to marry. The author was also Manuel's lieutenant in the CSA army. I consider this a AAA source. Both obituary and letter referred to him as Manuel.

As yet I have no feedback from requests to Oklahoma for more info on Pat Hennessey Massacre.

Glad to reinforce your conclusion that the "Henesee" in I T Avery's letter was Emanuel Augustus (Manuel) Hennessee.
I find no family record of the date of Manuel's return from California, but his marriage in 1854 makes 1853 credible. He, his oldest brother and many others from Burke went there in 1852.
Since Manuel was born the same year (1835) as Alphonso Calhoun Avery, the two teenagers could have been buddies. I T Avery's reference to "Henesee" suggests his son knew Manuel well enough to differentiate him that way. Also. "Henesee" is one among many spellings of the name in the 19th Century.
How else and how much I T Avery and Manuel were acquainted, I can only conjecture. The Hennessee farm on Hunting Creek was opposite Johns River and Lower Creek five or more miles down the Catawba River from Swan Pond. It was much much closer to Belvidere, the farm on Johns River of Mrs. Avery's Erwin parents, including cousins of Alphonso Calhoun. Best I can conclude, the Hennessee farm was not as large or as fertile or as farmable or as prosperous as Swan Pond or Belvidere. Also, Burke County Heritage articles support that the Avery and Erwin families had a higher social standing and greater wealth than the Hennessees, and most Avery and Erwin sons were better educated.
Another source reports Manuel was active politically (as were the Avery generations and kin) for Democratic candidates and causes, with Manuel enthusiastically participating in an electioneering parade through Burke County before the Civil War.

James David Hennessee did not serve in the Civil War. He, like his father, was a farmer and a blacksmith. He lived on the family plantation and became the owner. His wife's family came from Missouri and her father was one of the first doctors in Morganton.

At the time of his death the Hennessee plantation had been reduced to about 150 acres.

James married Margaret Elmena Bouchelle on 29 Nov 1855 in Burke County, North Carolina. Voter records in the office of "Clerke of the Superior Court of Burke County in the State of North Carolina on the 25th July 1861" lists "M. S. Hennessee and Thos. Hennessee". The dais votes being cast by the Members of Company G of the 1st Regiment of North Carolina Volunteers. It appears that these two are brothers who served and died together during the Civil War...DAH.

Lieutenant Manassa S. Hennessee

Among the soldiers honored by the Confederate monument on Courthouse Square in Morganton, NC are Lt. Manassa S. Hennessee of the North Carolina Cavalry and four of his brothers.

Monument to dead Confederate soldiers at Finn's Point national Cemetery.

Among the Confederate dead memorialized in the Finns Point National Cemetery in New Jersey is Private Manassa Hennesey of the North Carolina Cavalry. He died a prisoner of war at nearby Fort Delaware.

When Manassa rode into his last military engagement, at Irvine, Kentucky, July 30, 1863, he was Private Hennesey, Company B, 5th Battalion, North Carolina Cavalry. That rank and affiliation followed him as Yankee prisoner and to his Yankee-land grave.

Neither he nor his captors knew that he advanced to lieutenant after his capture. When Company B returned to the battalion’s Tennessee base, it became Company K in the new 65th North Carolina Regiment, and Private Hennessey was advanced to 3rd Lieutenant -- even though he was then “Absent Prisoner of War.”

The promotion followed a disastrous rear guard action during a retreat that left the commissioned officers of Company B captured or censured. The 25-year-old Manassa advanced in rank ahead of survivors who before the raid were corporals and sergeants.

The Company K muster rolls carried Lt. Hennessey for a year until word came confirming his death April 8, 1864. Two conclusions come from reading between the lines in the Official Records and other accounts of the retreat:

1. Decisive action by Private Hennessey saved comrades from capture or death at Irvine and led to his extraordinary promotion.

2. He was the “disciplined example” that General S. B. Buckner sought, found and rewarded after “proper investigation (into) reprehensible … conduct of some … subordinate commanders … in the partial disaster.”

The North Carolinians had been at Winchester, KY, on a raid July 29, 1863, when their commander, Brigade Colonel John Scott, learned that Union “troops were pouring into Lexington (17 miles northeast) … and were rapidly being mounted.

“…I moved (my) command toward Irvine,” 25 miles south and assigned the 5th Battalion (with Pvt. Hennessey) to stall the Union troops, Colonel Scott wrote in his report. “It rained … all night, and the road was very rough.”

As rearguard, “the (5th) battalion suffered heavy casualties,” reports North Carolina Troops 1861-1865. “…The battalion was cut off. (It) charged a superior force of Federal cavalry in a desperate attempt to rejoin the main body. The results were disastrous. Those who managed to escape capture found they had to run a gauntlet of Yankee soldiers before they reached Colonel Scott’s command.”

In “column of fours,” reported Captain Virgil S. Lusk of Company A, “down that narrow gorge dashed the Fifth North Carolina…Cavalry, riding at full speed to attack an enemy ten to one, riding right into the jaws of death.”

After the disaster, General Buckner ordered an investigation. Lt. James Newton Anderson of Company B was arrested. Later he resigned. Pvt. Hennessey was named 3rd Lieutenant. Lost between the lines in the Official Records is a description of exactly what Pvt. Hennessey did to earn this advancement.

When Manassa had joined the cavalry in 1862, he and brother Thomas were already veterans of infantry action. They had fought with Company G (Burke Rifles), 1st Regiment North Carolina Infantry, in the first land battle of the war. It was at Big Bethel Church near Yorktown, VA, June 10, 1861. Company G took part in the repulse of the enemy’s first advance. The Confederates won. Even the Richmond, VA, newspapers reported the North Carolinians were the best on the field.

Manassa was 23 and Thomas 26 when they answered a call to resist “this War of Northern Aggression.” They enlisted April 25, 1861, after Fort Sumter but before North Carolina seceded from the Union. Joining the regiment later in the year were two of their brothers, Robert Jones (RJ), 20, and Patrick Waightstill, 28, bachelors as were Manassa and Thomas.

At the end of their enlistments in November 1861, all four accepted their discharges. By March 1862, RJ, Waightstill and Thomas had re-enlisted -- and an older brother, cabinetmaker and gold miner Emanuel Augustus (Manuel), 30, had enlisted -- in the infantry. Before following his brothers to training, Manuel waited for the birth of a son on April 16. The name chosen for the boy was Manassa. He was not -- as custom dictated for the first son -- named after the father or a grandfather. He was named for his young Uncle Manassa. That break with tradition supports that Manassa S. Hennessey was revered – from a role in the Battle at Big Bethel or at least in his family -- and that he had the attributes (charisma or character or courage) that could win him a nephew namesake and battlefield honors.

Having earlier walked with the infantry, Manassa preferred a cavalry mount for his remaining service. He rode up the Blue Ridge to neighboring Mitchell County and re-enlisted. He joined Captain Samuel English’s Mitchell Cavalry July 17, 1862. They guarded the Tennessee-Kentucky border until the raid into Kentucky in 1863.

Born in 1838, Manassa S. Hennessey was the seventh son (ninth child) of Patrick and Nancy Sudderth Hennessa. Their farm was on the south side of the Catawba River near Hunting Creek and the Hennessee-Sudderth Ferry on the road from Morganton to Wilkes. Patrick’s death at age 52 in 1845 had left Nancy a widow with 11 children (ages 5 to 20) and the farm, a mix of river bottomlands and forested hills topped by rolling crop and pastureland. Her four youngest sons were too young at mid-century to follow two older brothers for the California Gold Rush, but they were in their 20s and bachelors as the war approached.

Complicating this history is a lack of family records. Blame the Flood of 1916. It ravaged a Hennessee home and scattered the family Bible, records, photographs and other memorabilia down the Catawba River. Also complicating the history are the various spellings of the family name. Army records show that RJ and Thomas spelled it “Hennessa,” and the other four sons of Patrick and Nancy Hennessa in the Army spelled it “Hennessey.” By the 1880s, the spelling was changing to “Hennessee,” and it is “Hennessee” on the Burke monument for all five men in the Confederate Army from this Burke family.

Manassa Nixon (Nick) Hennessee III is a grandson and namesake of Manassa Nixon (Nas) Hennessee, a Burke County, NC merchant and political leader who was a nephew of Lt. Manassa S. Hennessee. Family lore was that Nas (born in 1862) was named for the Battle of Manassas, but the subsequent discovery Uncle Manassa challenged Nick to learn more about Lt. Manassa Hennessee.

Nick is a former bank vice president and newspaper editor. Retired since 1993, Nick has been a family fiduciary and caregiver, free-lance writer and economic development consultant. Nick is a member of the North Carolina Civil War Roundtable, Burke County Historical Society, Friends of the National Parks at Gettysburg, Muttenz Descendants Inc., the Bethania and Wachovia historical societies, Twin City Kiwanis and the Torch Club.

Nick and his wife Betty have numerous Confederate ancestors, including soldiers who were killed at Gettysburg and Petersburg.

This lady's death certificate indicates that she is the daughter of Emanuel Hennessee and Caroline E Johnson. She is Sarah W Hennessee. She married George I Farr and they were the parents of a daughter, Mannie B Farr.
Sarah died of influenza. Her widower was subsequently admitted to the Western NC asylum and died there in 1929. He is buried there.

Emanuel A. "Gus" Hennessee

studied medicine at U.S.Grant University and became a general practitioner and settled in Glen Alpine as a doctor around the turn of the century. In 1913 a bill for professional services rendered by Dr. Hennessee to a
member of the Pitts family, resulted in a fight in which Gorman Pitts was killed by Dr. Hennessee. He was tried for murder and cleared on grounds of self-defense.He was killed in Jan. 1918 as he was leaving train No.21 on his return from Greensboro where he had been attending a patient.

Garfield and Aaron Pitts were charged with the murder due to the feud that had grown between the families over the past years. The were tried in March, 1918 Erin Wiseman, who was found to have been hired by the Pitts family, was later convicted of the murder of Dr. Hennessee and sent to prison. Dr. Hennessee met his death in the same spot on which he killed Gorman Pitts some years before.

Hennessee, Emanuel Augustus (Jr.)

For many, life in post-Civil War South was difficult. Emanuel Augustus (Gus) Hennessee, Jr. (born December 30, 1863, Burke County, North Carolina) must have found it so. His father, Emanuel, Sr., had returned from the War partially paralyzed from a gunshot wound to the head, barely able to communicate. Mother Elizabeth Caroline became head of the household, a job she filled admirably.

A special bond formed between mother and son. This was best reflected in a letter postmarked Rollins July 21, 1889, mailed to his post at Fort Riley, Kansas: "...all well only me", "...five long years to serve I fear I will be gon and never see you", and "...I want you to be a good boy & if I never see you in this world I hope to meet you in heaven God bless you I love you as Dear as a mother could love a child." In less than a month, by August 19, 1889, Elizabeth was dead from an undiagnosed ailment. Perhaps it was then that Gus vowed to become a doctor and help those he could.

Enlisted October 1, 1883, Cincinnati, Ohio, Gus was promoted to the rank of Sergeant October 15, 1887. Described "character excellent, honest and faithful", Gus spent a total of 8 years in Troop G, 7th Regiment, at Fort Riley, 1 year in the Hospital Corps, Jefferson Barracks, Louisiana, and about 4 years in Battery D, 1st Artillery, Jackson Barracks, Louisiana. While with Troop G, Gus engaged in the Sioux War at Wounded Knee and White Clay Creek, South Dakota. These encounters heightened his desire to become a doctor.

October 18, 1891, Gus married Mary Emily (Mollie) Merriott (b September 27, 1867, Carter County, Tennessee), daughter of James Merritt and Mary Ann Garrison. Their first child (and only daughter), Minnie Alice, was born in 1892, Shell Creek, Tennessee.

1893-4 Catalog of U. S. Grant University lists Gus as a first year student in the Preparatory School at Athens, Tennessee. This was a first step toward fulfilling his dream of becoming a doctor.

By late 1899, children Eugene Lionel (1894 Athens-1955); Valentine Broadway (1897 New Orleans, Louisiana-1971); and Charles Robert (1899 New Orleans-1973) were added to the family. Sadly, Minnie Alice died in 1896 and was buried in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Despite much responsibility and heartache, the 1900 annual catalog, Grant University, listed "E. A. Hennessee of Louisiana as a graduate of the Department of Medicine at Chattanooga, Tennessee, during 1899-1900."

Gus obtained his license to practice medicine in 1902. He joined the State Medical Society in 1904 and became a Charter Member of the Burke County Medical Society. Proud of his new home in Glen Alpine and wishing to be near his growing family, Gus located his medical office on the grounds of his property.

Gus obtained the reputation of fearless, courteous, and a dedicated doctor with a fine bedside manner. A natural psychologist, he was usually able to distinguish real ailments from psychosomatic. He was a healer who made some of his own medicine. Gus was willing to respond to calls 24 hours a day, in all forms of weather, and by any means of transportation to reach those in need.

Children William Nixon (1900-1983); Aubrey Conrad (1903-1959); John Alexander (1904-1978); Emanuel Augustus III (1906-1996); Frank Narcissus (1908-1986); Patrick Henry (1910-1973); and Ivison Merriott (1912-1913) were all born in Burke County. The sudden and unexpected birth of Ivison, while Gus was away, took the life of Mollie July 28, 1912. Ivison died August 12, 1913, living just over a year.

Gus married Linnie Raye (Raye) Brinkley (1893 Glen Alpine-1981), oldest daughter of James Marshall Brinkley and Minnie Rowe, December 20, 1912. Children Albert Edward (1914) and Nita Raye (1916) were added to the already large family.

Ominous events now loomed on the family's horizon. Trouble developed in 1913 with former friends, possibly over an exchange of bills. A violent altercation eventually ensued, leading to one death and serious injury to Gus. Tried but acquitted on grounds of self-defense, Gus recovered and returned to his medical practice.

With no further incidents, the tragedy that occurred January 31, 1918, was unexpected. Gus, asked to visit a patient at St. Leo's Hospital, Greensboro, was returning home on Train #21. Shortly after stepping onto the platform at Glen Alpine, Gus was shot and killed. Although others were first charged with his murder, they were acquitted. Later Aaron Wiseman of Avery County was tried, convicted, and sentenced to death. The sentence was commuted to 30 years in prison. Wiseman was paroled in 1929.

Gus was buried alongside Mollie in the old Methodist Church graveyard, Glen Alpine. The family, as a family, was destroyed by his death. The older children moved away. The younger children by Mollie, first cared for by relatives, followed. Traumatized by the events, Raye left Glen Alpine with her children. She rarely returned.

A COUNTRY DOCTOR'S LEDGER

(PRACTICE IN BURKE COUNTY)
1900-1918

Introduction

The concise ledger of Dr. E. A. Hennessee, Jr. highlights the 1900-1918 medical history of many patients from families living in the Burke County, North Caroline area during that period. Most of the patients were from the Glen Alpine area of North Carolina.

The ledger provides some answers to questions, such as:
O Who were the patients?
O How much were the charges for medical care,
medicine, and even dental care?
O What were the forms of paying for these services?

Challenges to the Doctor

Dr. Hennessee was true Burke Countian. He was born in 1863 near the Catawba River just north of Morganton on his family's original land grant of 1778. During the Indian Wars, he served several tours in the Calvary, (scout in Sioux Campaign), hospital corps, and artillery.

He was a graduate of Grant University (now Tennessee Wesley) with a Medical Degree in 1900. His education was self-supported and made more challenging by a growing family. "Molly", his first wife inspired his dedication to an education. The doctor obtained his license to practice medicine in 1902 and join the State Medical Society in 1994. Then, he became a younger charter member of the Burke County Medical Society (along with Dr. Phifer - the historian of Burke County). Proud of his new home in Glen Alpine and desiring to be near his growing family, he located his clinic on the grounds of his property.

The Country Doctor

Dr. Hennessee had the reputation of a fearless, courteous, and dedicated doctor with a fine bedside manner. A natural psychologist, he usually was able to distinguish real ailments from psychomatic. He was a healer who made some of his own medicine. The Doctor was willing to respond to calls 24 hours a day in all kinds of weather, and by any means of transportation (this included the first automobile in Burke County) to reach those in need. He is buried in the old Methodist Church graveyard in Glen Alpine.

THE FEUD BETWEEN THE HENNESSEE'S AND THE PITTS
Dr. Emanuel Augustus Hennessee JR. "Gus"

In 1892 Dr. Hennessey entered medical school in the ,state of Tennessee. He obtained his license to practice medicine in 1902. he joined the state medical society in 1904. This made him a charter member of the Burke County medical Society. Up until this point, Dr. Henne-ssey had lived in several different sta-tes, and had sever-al kids. His intentions was, to have more kids. So he moved back to Glen Alpine North Caroline, which was the area that he was born , and grew up in. On the same property, he had his doctors office as well.

In 1906, he built a large home, (see pictures below) which is still there today
Notice the picture above, Dr. Hennessey is on his horseless Carriage. Back in those days, and automobile was referred to as a horseless carriage. Dr. Hennessee was one of the first persons to have a auto-mobile. It has been stated, that Gus was the first person to have a automobile in Burke County. Dr. Hennessee had the reputation of a fearless, courteous, and dedicated doctor with a fine bedside manner. A natural psychologist, he usually was able to distinguish real ail- ments from psychomatic. He was a healer who made some of his own medicine. The Doctor was willing to respond to calls 24 hours a day in all kinds of weather, and by any means of transportation (this included the first automobile in Burke County) to reach those in need.

The next 13 years propose a very different challenge for a Dr. one day a dispute broke out between Dr. Emanuel Au-gustus Hennessee Junior, and the Pitts Family. Until this day, the cause of the conflict is not clear. As the old clichâe goes, there are at least two sides, to every story. One story is, a $.50 fee, for the rental off a Mule was not paid in a timely manner.The second story is, a doctors service was render-ed, but had not been paid for, in a timely manner.

In 1913 the feud became deadly. Below, is a article from the St. Louis Post news-paper describing the incident.

From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Raleigh, N. C. -- "He was the worst man I ever attended," said Dr. Hall in the Superior court of North Carolina, sitting at Morgantown, Burke County, in descry-being the hero of the most bloody feud fight ever recorded in the state. Then he gave a description of the beating up as follows: "Dr. Hennessey was shot near the left eye, there were two bullet wounds in the left shoulder, a ball had entered the left hip, his lower jaw was fractured in two places, a knife wound on the back of his hands had Severed the tendons, a bone was broken in his left hand, his scalp was lacerated to the bone in 14 places, the left ear was cut and bruised and his right ear was hanging by a shred of skin." Two of the 12 feudists were fined $500 each with an added $500 as court costs. The other 10 were fined $25 each. This was the latest chapter in the notorious

Hennessey-Pitts feud, which has been waged for 10 years. The payment of these fines and costs canceled the obligat-ions of the feudists to the state of North Carolina, but, the judicial formality merely closed an incident of the feud itself, which now bid fair to go on.

Martha Pitts, 27 , a typical rosy-cheeked mountain girl, sits alone in the home of her father, W. D. Pitts, at Glen Alpine, N. C. She was to have married Joe Hennessee, the physician's bother, who keeps the general store in competition with her father's store. After a lapse of 10 years, Martha Pitts is still a maid. She remains true to her first love, but holds her duty to her family and the feud above that of self.

It was at Glen Alpine January 13, 1913 that the feud betw-een the Pitts and Hennessee burst into flames.Thirteen men and boys were engaged in age from 55 down to 11 and not one came out of the fight unscaved. Children with barely strength enough to lift rifles fought side by side with their elders. Years ago the Hennesses and Pitts had been warm friends. Farmers and proprietors of general country stores, the Pitts were prosperous and prominent in that section. Dr. E. A. Hennessee jr, head of his clan, was a practicing physician. The feud had its origin in a dispute about 50 cents for the hire of a mule in which Dr. Hennessee encountered W. D. Pitts, the country storekeeper.

That was 10 years ago, but that quarrel has never been permitted to die. There were gory battles galore, but no Homicides until January 1913. That day Dr. Hennessee entered the Pitts store to buy a horse brush. His brother's store was out of horse brushes. His entrance into the gathering place of the Pitts faction aroused indignation and before the physician could make known his errand, two of the Pitts boys attac-ked him. Gorman Pitts seized the doctor and bent his body back aga-nst the counter, while Garfield Pitts struck him twice with a scale's weight, breaking his jawbone and knocking him insensible.

He went home later and dressed his wounds. He took down a repeating rifle, buckled on his revolvers, slipped a surgeon's scalpel into his pocket and started out again. When he came in sight of the Pitts store, the feud cry of the Pitts clan rang out and the fight was on.The winch-ster came up from the crook rof the doctor's arm and then one of the Pitts followers doubled up with a bullet in his abdomen. Gorman Pitts threw an iron weight that struck Dr. Hennessee in the breast: then som-one came up struck him while he was dazed with a pair of brass knuc-kles. At close quarters, the doctor resorted to his surgeon's scalpel and stabbed Gorman in the stomach from which wound the man died in a few weeks. Abel Pitts struck the doctor with a club and Dr. Henne-ssee stabbed Abe in the shoul-der. Hennessee's brother and a Pitts boy were engaged in a rough and tumble fight nearby. A gun was fired from behi-nd the post office and Dr. Hennessey went down with a bullet in the shoulder. As he straightened up, Bud Pitts shot him in the leg. Gorman Pitts, badly wounded though he was, came up from behind the physician, placed a revolver within six inches of the doctor's head and attempted to shoot. The cartridge failed to explode and Hennessee knocked the weapon down with his injured hand. It then expl-oded and the shot went through the doctor's shoulder, narrowly missing the lung. Robert Hennessee, the doctor's young son, 11 years old, came into the fight and shot Gor-man Pitts who was beating the doctor about the head with the exploded revolver. Bud Pitts took away Robert Hennessee's weapon and struck the boy with the breach knocking him senseless in the road. Dr. Hennessey in the meantime had been knocked down with a club.

When the trial was held, Dr. Hennessee was acquitted, on the grounds of selfdefense.

The above text was taken verbatim from a copy of the St. Louis Post.

On January 31,1918 while returning from visiting a patient in Green-sboro North Carolina, Dr. Hennessee was shot to death (He was shot 10 to 12 times at point blank range) as he stepped off the train in Glen Alpine.

At the time of the murder, it was assumed that Aaron and Garfield Pitts was guilty of the murder, due to the fact that, they had a serious fight with Dr. Hennessee 5 years before, in which Dr. Hennes-see killed one of the Pitts brothers. They were both put on trial for murder, they both was found not guilty. Because, some time doing the trial, it was discovered that Bud Pitts had hired Aaron Wiseman of Avery County, to assassinate Dr. Hennessee. Aaron Wiseman was tried and found guilty of murdering Dr. Hennessee. He was sent-enced to death, which was later commuted to 30 years in prison. He was released in 1929, after only 12 years in prison. For his own privacy, he moved to another state.

Gus was buried alongside Mollie in the old Methodist Church grave-yard, in Glen Alpine. The family was destroyed by his death. The older children moved away. The younger children by Mollie, first cared for by relatives, followed. Traumatized by the events, Raye left Glen Alpine with her children. She rarely returned.

The picture below was taken several years before Dr. Hennessee built his house on the heel, south of the train depot. In this photo, the Glen Alpine Baptist Christ was located where Dr. Hennessee's house is today. The church was moved several hundred yards to the west in 1887, where it is located today. Notice in the photo, Bud Pitts’s market. Inside and outside the store, is where the largest, and blood-iest feud ever, in the history of North Carolina, took place, between two families, in 1913. To the right of Pitts’s market, sets a train depot. Dr.Hennessee was assassinated, as he got off the west bound train at the Glen Alpine depot, in 1918.

Following is info I received from Wanda Parnell:
"I also have some additional information (documented) on the young child Joseph Alexander Ferree who is buried in the Sudderth Cemetery near his grandfather Patrick Hennessa (per tombstone). He was the thirteen year old
son of Manual Hennessee's sister Martha (Hennessee) Ferree and John G. Ferree who died in 1853. This information seems to be missing from Vol 1 of the Burke Co. Heritage Book."

My reply:

"Thanks for this Ferree info. Cousin David Hennessee in his 1991 compilation reported 1860 and 1870 Census data on that family that showed J. A. born 1853 and a sister, Martha, born 1847. I have noted your info in the margin of my copy and the need to reconcile whether J.A. born or died in 1853."

Wanda descends from Sudderth and Singleton. (See her Singleton sketch in Burke Heritage II and compare it with Sudderth sketch by Throneburg in the same book.) More importantly, Wanda arranged clean up of the Sudderth
Cemetery and has completed cataloging of identifiable graves. For those accomplishments she is due our thanks and any assistance. Her address is Wanda Parnell .

Nancy Sudderth was a sister of Col. John Sudderth who is buried in this cemetery. Likewise, Nancy's husband, Patrick Hennessee (Hennesa) is buried in the Sudderth Cemetery to the left of grandson, Joseph A. Ferree. Joseph A. Ferree's grandmother Nancy is buried in North Cove in McDowell County NC. She went there to live with a son after the death of her husband, Patrick Hennessee.

"In 1904, Thomas Patrick Hennessee died from typhoid fever. Shortly after his death, his wife sold the farm to Bob Walker and bought a smaller farm about 1/2 mile away.

In 1910, Ida died form tuberculosis. Two of their children, Martha and Eva, had already died from typhoid also. The family was then split up. Millard and Lee, being the oldest, were able to take
care of themselves and remained on the farm. Henry was sent to live with Marcus Avery Deal (known to children of Tom and Ida as "Uncle Bud"). Albert, the youngest, and his only living sister, Florence, went to live with Isaac Lafayette Anderson (born 8/11/1867, died 8/11/1940) who was married to Clara Adelaide Deal (born 9/26/1873, died 11/2/1954). She was a sister to Marcus Avery Deal. They were known to Albert and Florence as "Uncle Fate & Aunt Clara". Isaac Anderson was also a brother to James Finley Anderson.

James Finley Anderson was the father of Jamie Blair Anderson who Albert later married."

Seeking first name of the Mr. Hennessee who m Regina Rosanna Duckworth, Burke Co., NC.

He was probably either one of the two brothers, Philpher or Patrick Hennessee, as seen on the 1880 Census in Burke Co., NC.

He died in the 1890's in Morganton, Burke Co., NC. So he is not on any census as an adult. He and Regina Rosanna had a daughter, Callie W. Hennessee, about 1895.

By 1900, Regina Rosanna (listed alternately as Rosann R. and Regina R.), was a widow.

She remarried Jacob B. Bailey of Burke Co., NC, about 1903.

• J. Gordon Queen encountered a swarm of bees in Paul Hennessee's yard. Jonas Orders was the hero of the day as he managed to return the bees to a bee gum. Stopped in at Hennessee's Store and found the manager, Nell Hennessee, a little shy at first. Customers teased her a little bit and she finally admitted she used to fix bicycles "when she was a tomboy." Visited a lot of the businesses and will say Glen Alpine is outstanding and the residents are a friendly bunch and everybody knows everybody else.

Albert was born in Glen Alpine, NC, the son of Dr. Emanuel Augustus Hennesse Jr. & Linnie Rae Brinkley. After the death of Dr. Augustus Hennessee, Raye married Calvin Avery Houk who adopted Albert.

Albert Houk obtained a PhD in biochemistry from Columbia University in New York. He served in the Army for five years. He went on to work as a laboratory assistant director in Rochester, N.Y. and with the FOod and Drug Administration. He retired after 25 years of service.

He died of congestive heart failure and pneumonia at age 88. His wife, Vivian Louretta Judge, predeceased him. He is survived by son James and WIlliam Keith Houk and a sister, Nita Raye Hennessee-Houk Shepard. A third son, Laurence Edward Houk, also predeceased him.

Albert Hennessee-Houk MONTGOMERY, Md. ---

Dr. Albert Edward Hennessee-Houk, 88, died at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, of congestive heart failure and pneumonia, at Montgomery General Hospital, Montgomery County, Md. Albert was born May 20, 1914, in Glen Alpine, N.C., the son of Dr. Emanuel Augustus Hennessee Jr. and Linnie Raye (Raye) Brinkley and the adopted son of Calvin Avery Houk.

After the death of Dr. Hennessee, Raye married Avery Houk, son of John Lewis Houk and Mary Ann Ward of the Quaker Meadows area.

As a young person, Albert joined the Boy Scouts, becoming an Eagle Scout while in Austin High School, Chicago. He received a scholarship to and graduated with a BS from the University of Minnesota, St. Paul, in 1936. He obtained an MS in 1938, teaching chemistry and agricultural chemistry at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind., 1938-39.

While conducting cancer research at Yale University under a Fellowship, Dr. Houk obtained a PhD in biochemistry from Columbia University, New York City.

Before joining the Army for a five-year term, he taught physiological chemistry and clinical laboratory methods to medical students at Chicago Medical School as well as working for Standard Brands, New York City, doing quality control and product development.

He also worked at H.J. Heinz, Pittsburgh, supervising Heinz's nutritional laboratory staff.

Dr. Houk saw active duty in the Army Medical Services Corps, was assigned to Second General Hospital, Landstuhl, Germany, the Army Medical Nutrition Laboratory, Chicago, and the Fitzsimons Army Hospital, Denver. Honorably discharged, Dr. Houk joined the Army Reserves.

He retired as a lieutenant colonel after 20 years of service. He had worked as Acting Inspector General of Army Medical Units (Medical Services Corps). Hospitals included the 805th Hospital Center, Rockville, Md., 2290th U.S. Army Hospital, Rockville, Md., among many others.

In 1955, Dr. Houk became assistant director of Laboratory Services, St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, N.Y., and in 1956 chief chemist at Providence Hospital in Washington, D.C. He served as biochemist for the Food and Drug Administration, evaluating new drug applications, food additives as well as pesticides and their effect on the environment, retiring after 25 years of service.

Dr. Houk is listed in "American Men and Women of Science," 14th Edition, Volume 3, G-1, 1979.

The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, at Luther Rice Memorial Baptist Church in Silver Spring, Md., with Pastor Mark Stauffer officiating. Burial was in National Memorial Park, Falls Church, Va. An Army Honor Guard played Taps, presenting Albert's oldest son, James Calvin Houk, with an American flag.

Surviving are: sons James and William Keith Houk; two grandchildren, Brian and Stephanie Houk; as well as a sister, Nita Raye Hennessee-Houk Shepard.

His wife, Vivian Louretta (Louretta) Judge, predeceased him. She is also interred in the family plot at the National Memorial Park along with son Lawrence Edward Houk.

Pastor Stauffer's remarks emphasized that Dr. Houk's academic and government careers were a natural extension of the care and generosity he felt for other people. His dedication to serving others and
bettering their lives could not be surpassed.

"He was very intelligent and a lover of people. He was a productive person having retired many times. Always took off Saturday evenings to square dance. Loved dancing so much he didn't miss many Saturday nights. He had a hip replacement (some seem to think) that he wore-out dancing.

He was a farmer, mill worker, dairyman, storekeeper, philosopher and a conservative. He was a member of Cedar Grove United Church, Sunshine, NC, most of his life.

He had very good health all his life and died of heart failure at age 86.

He never admitted he was a senior citizen. One his favorite sayings during springtime - A spring rain is like an old maid's dance - It's soon over!"

A native of Rutherford County, she retired from the Cleveland County Department of Social Services, where she worked with the food stamp program. She was a member of Double Shoals United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Russell K. and Ella Mae Jackson Hennessee; four brothers, William, Emanuel and Walter Hennessee and Andrew DePriest; and three sisters, Nancy Hunt, Lovenia Newton and Evalee Hudson.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Elbert Buddy Bowen of the home; a son Phillip Bowen and wife, Jennifer, of Concord; two brothers, Floyd Hennessee and wife, Leatrice, of Hanahan, S.C., and Claude Hennessee of Rutherford County; a twin sister, Jean Campbell of Hickory; two grandchildren, Zachary and William Bowen; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Haskins in 1983; her parents, James Patrick & Rosa Lonon Hennessee; two sisters, Cora Samuels & Gladys Thompson; three brothers, Jim "J.P.", Ray, & Joseph Hennessee.

Survivors include her two sisters and their husbands, Margaret & Lewis Gibson of Virginia and Faye & James Williford of Florida.

Recorded in the summer of 1966 at Asheville, NC;

"Today I returned to North Cove, in McDowell County, to the place of my birth, childhood and youth. I wandered to the old schoolhouse hill, which is long since burned down, and the forest is growing where the baseball field was fifty years ago. The wind whistled in the trees. The forest even looked primeval and it was hard to tell that there had been a building and life there at one time.


I thought of the old baseball team, where I was the second pitcher and the second baseman and the members of the tam. There was Ken Chapman and Don Lonon and Gardner Conley and Grady Lonon, and Thad Conley, and Reed Conley and Claude McKinney and others that played on that old team.


I thought of what had happened in those days, of the World War and the Western Front, that I spent my boyhood on, and where I went through five major offensives and many smaller battles, and saw many, many people killed.


I then wandered to the old North Catawba church, the church of my boyhood, where we had had many a fine picnic, and the graves of my ancestors buried there.


I thought of all my friends, of old man Allie McCall, a blind man that lived nearby, of Charlie McCall, a friend of my boyhood, and of old man George Conley, the head of the Sunday School. And the trains that went by the little flagstop station, and that we'd ride to Ashford and back and that we'd go to the county seat on weekends and to the moving picture shows, and the drugstore, and other places.



And I thought of the wonderful days in the fields, in the swimming holes, and the fishing and wandering in the woods like a boy would. Many hunting trips of my two dogs, Jack and Old Tops. How I taught them to run cattle, and drive cattle and the many trips we made to Morganton, twenty-two miles away, with droves of cattle, and buying cattle in Avery County as a little boy. And going to Morganton and selling the cattle, and I would always buy two cans of salmon, one for my two dogs and one for me.


And then I would come back on the train and stop off at Marion at my uncle Wade's. And so...


Anyway the memories of Uncle Sid Conley and his tales of a hundred years ago. When he was a little boy, he watched a panther come up one end of a log, and black bear on the other. And they met there and they fought. And the bear slapped the Pannther off into the stream, and the panther jumped back up. And the bear slapped him off again, and the bear made a fatal error, the third time. He grapped and tried to hug the panther, and the panther cut him to pieces with his claws, and with his teeth, and then Uncle Sidney Conley killed the panther. And so that was tale that went way back almost to the colonial period or at least to the pioneer days of North Carolina.


And then I remember a story that he told about fat cattle. My father was telling about what fat cattle he had. Uncle Sindey said, "Hot Si, Bob, you don't know anything about fat cattle. In the year of 1840, the railroad came up to Morganton, and a drover from Tennessee had a hundred fat steers, Hot Si, and in driving them across the Linville Mountain to Morganton during a storm, the lightning hit a fat steer, and the grease ran for a quarter of a mile!"


The earliest Hennessee in America, as far as we know, landed in Maryland about 1690. He had guessed wrong at the Battle of the Boyne in the English Civil War. He had supported the ambitions of James II. He had fought at the Saarsfield brigade at the Battle of the Boyne in Ireland. And for his part in that, after James II lost his throne, the principal officers were exiled, including him. He was exiled and lived in Maryland. As far as we know he was a member of the Roman Catholic Church. He brought his wife to Maryland and had one son. And this son married in Virginia into a family by the name of Courtney who were members of the Episcopal Church. This son at,...this son had a son, who was killed at the Battle of Fort Necessity, in Washington's Company, in 1754 or 1755, I'm not sure which. He in turn left a boy seven years old. And this boy fought through the Revolution and then cam down near Morganton and settled in Burke County.


And his name was Patrick Hennessee and shows that he, the record of 1790 Census, the first one ever taken in the county, showed him to have owned three slaves, and he had one son over 16 years of age. This son was also named Patrick Hennessee, who was my great grandfather, and he married Nancy Sudderth, and they lived on the Catawba River, and had ten sons, including my grandfather, and two daughters.


His father gave him a large tract of land, in what is now Avery County, but which was at that time Burke County, near the village of Pineola in Avery County, and they lived there until two their children were born. And it was so lonely, they were ten miles from any other home, and her father died and left her a large tract of land on the Catawba River, near Morganton, and they moved to that and raised ten sons and two daughters.


And so, my grandfather's oldest brother was named Alexander; he died in California Gold Rush in 1852 and is buried in Yuba County, California.


There were four of the brother, Emmanuel (corrected later in the tape to show that this was Manassa) who was a lieutenant in the Confederate Army, and who was killed in action, and three other brothers who were killed in action, making four altogether who were killed in the War. Emmanuel,... Manassa is the one that was a lieutenant, Emmanuel Augustus Hennessee, the father of Doctor Hennessee and the grandfather of Paul Hennesssee, was shot through the brain at the first battle of Manassas, rather the second battle of Manassas, and lay wounded on the battlefield for around four hours, and part of his brian ran out on his forehead, and a man from Burke County picked him up and carried him in. And the doctors didn't think he had any chance of living and they just washed off his face and laid him on a bench to die, however, he got well, although he lost his sense of speech, but lived until 1903.


My grandfather, William R. Hennessee, who was a Captain in Stuart's (this may be an error; we believe that William Richard Hennessee served in Wade Hampton's South Carolina Cavalry; some evidence of this is offered by the fact that he named one of his sons Wade Hampton Hennessee; query whether Wade Hampton's Regiment was part of Stuart's Cavalry) Cavalry in the Civil War, was wounded and placed in the Quartermaster Corps in the year of 1864, and became a railway contractor in the years after the war, and built part of the Southern Railroad from Marion to Old Fort. Also, he built several portions of railways at many places in South Carolina, and three of my uncles were born down there. And he also built part of the E.T. & W.N.C. railroad at Cranberry, North Carolina, and the old brick commissary is still standing and my Uncle Will was clerk there.


He married my grandmother Olive Elizabeth Brown and had five sons and one daughter, including my father Robert Horace Hennessee."

MEMORIALS Hennessee Reunion, October 2, 2010

LOCKY (Hennessee) WILSON, widow of Raymond Wilson of Marion and aunt of Robert Hennessee, died in October 2008. She was 94 years old and was in a retirement home at Signal Hill, TN. She taught school and raised two sons, Robert and Joseph Wilson.

Marion, N.C. - Locky Hennessee Wilson, 95, of Marion, died Tuesday, October 14, 2008, in Signal Mountain, Tenn.

Mrs. Wilson was born January 22, 1913, and was a daughter of the late Robert and Lula Brown Hennessee.

She was a retired school teacher who taught third and fourth grade students in McDowell County for more than 30 years.

Her husband, Raymond Wilson preceded her in death.

Survivors include her sons, Bob Wilson and wife, Cindy, of Dunlap, Tenn., and Joe Wilson and wife, Candice, of Raleigh, N.C.; sister, Elizabeth Anderson, of Sarasota, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 18, 2008, in Westmoreland Chapel, Marion, N.C. The family will receive friends on Friday, October 17, 2008 from 4 to 6 p.m., at the funeral home.

Interment will be in McDowell Memorial Park.

Robert Horace Hennessee Sr.

GREENSBORO — Robert Horace Hennessee, Sr., 84, passed away Monday, June 11, 2007, at the Masonic and Eastern Star Home.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 16, at the Masonic and Eastern Star Home Chapel, with the Rev. Tommy Jones officiating.

Robert the youngest of 12 children was born November 4, 1922, in McDowell County, to the late Robert Horace Hennessee and Lula Alice Lonon Hennessee. He attended Lees McRae College from 1940 to 1942. He served his country in the Army during World War II in France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany, with the 9th Army. His decorations and citations are the Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, American Theater Service Medal, Bronze Star, EAME Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars. He was the McDowell County, N.C., Senior Citizen of the year in 1994, presented by McDowell Chamber of Commerce, Marion, N.C.

In 1995, he was presented a Certificate of Appreciation from McDowell County for Outstanding Personal Involvement and Significant Contribution to the well being and development of your community and McDowell County. He retired in 1987, as construction superintendent from Dewey Jordan Inc. Construction Company in Frederick, Md. He was active in Glenmont United Methodist Church, Silver Spring, Md., and was chairman of the Board of Trustees for many years. He is and has been a Master Mason since October 1957, and is a member of Gate City Lodge 694, A.F. & A.M, Greensboro, N.C.

Mr. Hennessee is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sarah Crawford Hennessee of the home; sons, Robert H. Hennessee, Jr. and wife Carolyn, Byrd Crawford Hennessee and wife, Dr. Louise Hennessee; daughter, Eleanor Lou Hennessee; granddaughters, Valerie and Katie; sisters, Locky Wilson and Elizabeth Anderson.

The family will receive friends following the service in the Atrium at the Masonic Home.

County in the 19th Century and whose descendants occasionally visited in Burke. "RH" was a highway construction engineer who built expressways including those here in Forsyth County and wife Sarah worked with my Betty at Baptist Hospital, the coincidence that had us visiting back and forth here and in Marion after he retired and particularly after RH and Sarah moved to the Masonic Home in Greensboro, where he died several years ago. Son is also an engineer, now living in Alabama, and daughter lives in Durham.
