I am looking at my copy of "Byars Family History" Copyright 1976 by Nell Byars Thaten. The binding was by Worth Bindery, Ft. Worth, Texas 76107. Published by Miran Publishers, Fort Worth, Texas 76116. It is a soft cover book, about the size of a sheet of paper folded in half. It has 185 pages, an Index, appendix and a Table of Contents. It brings Nell's "Byars Family" from Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and to Texas.
The first known ancestor is Jonas Byars b. ca 1718. Jonas married Francis Collins. Two known children are named in the book.
# 1. William Byars, who m Elizabeth Bedford.
#2. Henrietta Byars, who married Joel Blackwell, the only known child for them was Mary Blackwell.
Mary Blackwell married Richard Arnold and they had the following children:
(1) Rebecca Arnold
(2) Joel Arnold
(3) John Arnold
(4) Benjamin Arnold
(5) Richard Arnold
(6) Henrietta Arnold, m. Joab Byars
(7) Cinderella Arnold
(8) James Arnold
(9) Sally Arnold
(10) Daniel Arnold
(11) Nathaniel Arnold
(12) Thomas Arnold
(13) Alfred Arnold.
Nell stated it was possible there was one or more children, names unknown to her.
William Byars , son of Jonas Byars and Frances Collins Byars, married Elizabeth Bedford, daughter of Jonas Bedford and Amasa "Mercy" Raymond. Mercy was a descendant of a man the signed the Mayflower Compact.
As I said before the book is well written and contains copies of Wills, Marriage Records and many pictures. Nell was a very thorough researcher. She and several other Byars Descendants worked together to accumulate documents for any person named Byars/Byers or a variant of the name. All of those people have passed away. If you cannot find a place to purchase the book then try to get your local Library to order it inter Library loan. Or you might try asking the LDS Library to put a copy on a CD and let you purchase it. Or if you can make contact with Nell Byars Thaten's children they may have copies for sell.
I will be glad to look up things for you, provided you can give me a Given Name as well as a Surname and a time period. My husband has a terminal illness and it may take me awhile to get back to you. I hope to put all the issues of the Byars - Byers Family Enquirer on a CD in the near future. There are 22 issues that answers the questions many of you are asking now. cbh
My ggg grandfather Jonas Byars, proven son of Wm./Elizabeth also migrated to St. Clair Co., AL about the same time as Abraham/Mary. I noticed that both gave VA as birth then later NC. It is possible that they were born in VA.

Here are some notes from the book "Byars Family History"53 by Nell Byars Thaten:
Earliest known ancestor is Jonas Byars (b. circa 1718) who married Frances Collins. Some references call him James. They had at least two children named William Byars (who married Elizabeth Bedford) and Henrietta Byars (who married Joel Blackwell). William Byars birth date is unknown although he was married before the Revolutionary War. He died in the fall of 1819 in Spartanburg County, SC according to estate papers on file in the South Carolina Archives. Elizabeth Bedford Byars died in Chickasaw County, Mississippi in 1847.
It is not known when she moved to Mississippi, but some family members think it may have been only a few months before she died.
The children of William and Elizabeth Byars were: Robert Byars Rebekah Byars Seth Byars Lydia Byars Nancy Byars Joe Byars Jonas Byars, b.1790 in SC, married Sarah Davis (daughter of Benjamin Davis), moved to Alabama James Byars, b.1794 in SC, married Mary F. Richards before 1818, moved to Georgia Susie Byars Eunice Byars Joab Byars, b.1807 in SC, married Henrietta Arnold, died in Calhoun Co. Miss. in 1884.
The book includes significant details of the families of William and Elizabeth's children Jonas, James, and Joab.
The book includes a map that illustrates the Byars family migration as follows: Lancaster County, VA (arrived 1653) Lousia County, VA Hanover County, VA Franklin County, NC (early 1700's) Rutherford County, NC Spartanburg County, SC (arrived before Rev. War, left 1818) Butts County, GA (arrived 1819, left 1842) Tuscaloosa County, AL (migrated across 1842) Calhoun County, MS (arrived 1843, left 1892) Collin County, TX (arrived 1892, left 1920) Childress County, TX (arrived 1920, left 1976)

15. | Jonas Bedford Byars (3.William2, 1.James1) was born in 1790 in Spartanburg, South Carolina; died in 1860 in Hayden, Blount County, Alabama. Notes:
Jonas Bedford Byars was b. ca 1790 Spartanburg District S.C. Per the 1850 & 1860 Blount Co. AL Census records. and the "Memorial Record of Alabama, Vol. 1 1893 pg. 502. (see record under son, William George Byars). He died between 1860 & 1870 census in Blount County, Alabama.
Buried at Cedar Grove based on the following accounts.
1)Some cousins and I went to Cedar Grove to clean the cemetery in Mar. 2010 and two gentlemen from the hunting lodge where the cemetery now rests came by. One a Mr. Jones told us that as a child he remembers a large tombstone with the name of Jonas Byars sat in the cemetery and that years back vandals broke it apart and how sad it was.
2) Thursday February 11, 1892
Sketches of Blount County, Alabama by Mary Gordon Duffee
published in Blount County News and Dispatch. (Mary Gordon Duffee was a noted historian of the area).
"Mr. Jonas Byars lived to a ripe old age, passing his declining years in the old homestead, tenderly nourished by his dutiful son William and his good wife. He lived to see this region populated, and the ranks of wealth and fashion gather at the springs where so often he had come to hunt deer. Somehow, I love to think of this pioneer, and in memory I see his portly figure, his clean-shaven face, kindly eyes, soft, silken hair, and polite, gentle manners, as plainly as though the leaves of many autumns had not drifted above his silent tomb in the shadows of a beautiful CEDAR GROVE!"

end of obituary
Thomas Jefferson Byars 1866 - 1936 (person id I19506) is listed as spouse of Pauline B Fincher (person id I19507) which I believe is correct. However, that was probably his second wife. His first wife was Cora Bell Byars, whose maiden name was Fincher. She could have been Pauline's sister. I have a copy of Cora Bell Byars's death certificate that I can email to you.
