    • Johnson, Hennessee, Kincaid: Three Generations of Marriage

The heritage and ancestry between the Johnsons, Hennessees, and Kincaids is interwoven for most of the nineteenth century. Living in close proximity in western North Carolina, these families intermarried.

The first union took place on March 15, 1815, Burke County, with Jacob Johnson (b August 5, 1791, Rockingham County, Virginia) wedding Ailsey Hennessee (b c 1795 Burke County). Eleven children resulted from this marriage. Jacob and Ailsey moved to Cherokee County, North Carolina, and in 1850 were residing in Dwelling 582. Ailsey died July 31, 1865, and was buried in Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Johnsonville, North Carolina.

After Ailsey's death, Jacob, sometime after his 80th birthday, moved to Indian Territory in Oklahoma, Goingsnake District, joining two or three of his children and their families. Shortly before his death Jacob moved to Park Hill, Oklahoma, where he died August 22/27, 1877. He was buried in Park Hill Cemetery, Cherokee County, Oklahoma.

Jacob's half brother, Isaac Wilburn Johnson (b c 1808 Morganton - ) wed Catherine Louisa (Louisa) Kincaid (b 1810 Burke County - ) October 20, 1829. Isaac was a prosperous farmer who lived along the Catawba River, downstream from Hennessee property. A Johnson cemetery is located nearby. Isaac and Louisa had 10 children. Daughter Elizabeth Caroline and granddaughter Idalia (Ida) were to continue the Johnson, Hennessee, and Kincaid mergers.

Elizabeth Ann Truehart Johnson Collins (August 6, 1805 Burke County-June 6, 1886 Burke County), sister to Jacob and Isaac, widow of Joseph Lafayette Collins, wed John Kincaid (December 4, 1794, Burke County-June 28, 1863). Genealogical records place this union as 1880, however, this is impossible since John's death is recorded in 1863, with will probated that same summer. John was the son of

      James Kincaid and Jane Reed.

In March, 1854, Elizabeth Caroline Johnson (April 18, 1836 Burke County-August 19, 1889 Burke County) married the son of Patrick Hennessee II and Nancy Sudderth, Emanuel Augustus Hennessee, Sr. (March 26, 1826 Burke County-May 22, 1903 Burke County). Their daughter Idalia (July 25, 1856 Burke County-April 3, 1910 Burke County) wed Robert Horace Kincaid (November 12, 1854 Burke County-June 17, 1927 Burke County), son of James Murphy Kincaid (September 4, 1819 Burke County-June 21, 1897 Burke County) and second cousin, Mary Isabelle (Ibby) Kincaid (June 23, 1817 Burke County-January 26, 1864 Burke County) on February 29, 1876, (Leap Year Day) Burke County.

Additional lines of Johnson heritage: Philip Johnson (December 30, 1774 Virginia-June 30, 1848, Morganton) married 1st Martha Bassett (c 1770 Prince Edward County, Virginia - ) October 18, 1792, Prince Edward County. Child: Jacob Johnson. Philip married 2nd Ann Truehart (Truehard) Curd (March 21, 1766, Virginia-December 5, 1847, Morganton) daughter of Joseph Curd and Mary Truehart. Children: Peter (November 10, 1800 - ); Bennett S. (1803-November 30, 1840 Burke County); Elizabeth Ann Truehart (August 6, 1805-June 6, 1886 Burke County); Judith Woodson Johnson (1806 - ); Isaac Wilburn Johnson (c 1808 - ); and Daniel Phillip Johnson (July 2, 1811-June 16, 1896 Burke County). Philip Johnson's parents were Isaac Johnson (between 1750-54 Surry City, Virginia - ) and Judith Woodson (1758 - ). His maternal grandparents were Drury Woodson (c 1722 - ) and Lucy Christian (1735 - ).

The Hennessees are of Irish descent, a sect of Colgan Clan, Ireland. Their first known ancestor in North Carolina was Patrick Hennessee I. Patrick's will has not been found but was proved October, 1796, Tryon County.

The Kincaids trace their lineage back to Scotland at least as early as 1238 and to the ancient Earls of Lennox. In 1990 a Kincaid reunion was held at Milton of Campsie, Kirkintilloch, Scotland (near Glasgow). Madam Heather Kincaid of Kincaid, the first woman head of the Kincaid Clan, joined the group. When she died August 2, 1999, Madam Arabella Jane Kincaid of Kincaid, was confirmed by Lord Lyon, King of Arms of Scotland, to succeed her grandmother.
