      "MRS. JULIA BYARS DIES AT HER HOME; FRIDAY FUNERAL

      Funeral services for Mrs. Julia Cantrell Byars, 73, who died at the home of her son (Robert) in Smithville, Route 1, in the 16th district of Warren County, will be conducted from the New Bildad Church at 10 o'clock Friday morning. Burial will be in the New Bildad Cemetery.

      The services will be conducted by the Rev. Felix Cantrell.

      Mrs. Byars was the widow of the late John W. Byars, who died about 18 years ago, and the daughter of the late Bob and Letta Ann Cantrell of DeKalb County. She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church.

      Survivors include two sons, Green Byars, of McMinnville and Bob Byars of Smithville, Route 1; and two daughters, Mrs. I. C. Jones of McMinnville, Route 1, and Mrs. Senia March of Washington, D.C.

      High Funeral Homes in charge of arrangements."

    • Julia spent about 30 years of her life in the Middle Tennessee Hospital for the Insane (now Middle Tennessee Mental Health Institute) as did her mother, Lettie. Fire & flood destroyed all the records...DAH

      Her granddaughter, Lucile, remembers that she displayed obsessive-compulsive behavior. She would boil water (no soap), pour over the dishes and rinse several times. Lucile also remembers her grandmother's nightmares. Julia would take a stove-wood stick to bed with her to fend off critters as she feared rats or other inmates during her stay at the institution...DAH
