      The submitter apparently did not know about the much earlier ancestors of John Wilburn Hash as you will note.

      "The Hash (originally spelled Hache) ancestors fled from their homeland, France,to escape religious persecutions. Not long after their arrival in the New World, they were faced with the struggles and oppression brought about by the Civil War.But with their Hugenot ancestral grit and determination they perserved and made their mark on pioneer TN.

      John Wilburn Hash, Sr. was born Nov. 24, 1818 at Rock Island.His father was William Wesley Hash and his mother was Elizabeth Baldwin Hash.

      On Oct 13, 1842, John married Nancy Franks born June 7, 1822 in White County, the daughter of Jesse Franks and Mary (Polly) Moore Franks.(Note added here by Doris Buhr:Mary (Polly) Moore Franks is descended from the Rev. Richard Denton who came to this country in about 1635.The Rev. Denton is considered by some to be the father of the Presbyterian church in the United States.Sue Montgomery Cooke has a wonderful website about the Denton Family.Denton County and Denton, Texas are named for a Denton descendant.If you use your search engine and type in: Nancy Franks Sue Montgomery Cook Denton Family, you should get to the site. )

      The children of John and Nancy Franks Hash were:

      Elizabeth (Betty) born May 6, 1843, who married John Bybee on Aug. 16, 1860 and died May 25, 1862.
      Mary born JKan. 18, 1845, who married Byrd Gribble on Oct. 4, 1866 and died Jun 24, 1867.
      William Henderson (Buck)Hash born March 3, 1847 who married Josephine Potter on Dec. 18, 1871 and died Jul 28, 1912;
      Margaret Louisa, born Jun 6, 1851 who married Byrd Gribble on Jul 9, 1868 and (2) William Thomas Rowland and died May 5, 1928;
      James H., born Aug. 3, 1851 and died Nov 5 1866;
      Leeann, born 1854 who married William Trousdale Gribble on Oct. 5, 1871 and died Mar 19, 1925;
      Tabitha, born 1857 who married Monroe Gribble in 1872 and died (date unknown) in Coleman, Texas; (correction:Tabitha (my great grandmother)died in 1937 in Waco, Texas. She did live for a time with her daughter Sidya Elizabeth Gribble Brown wife of John Gilliam Brown, in Coleman, but she did not live in Coleman at the time of her death. Also, Tabitha was married to Henry R. Gribble who also died in Waco, Texas. Monroe Gribble was probably a nephew of Henry R. Gribble not her husband.)
      John Wilburn, Jr.born Sept. 10, 1858 who married (1) Mary Holly Mar 20 1892 and (2) Mary Chambers in 1902 and died Nov. 8, 1848;
      Jefferson Davis Hash born Jan 10, 1861 who married Mary (Dolly) Miller on Mar 13, 1890 and died Mar 12 1938; and
      George Washington Hash born in 1864 married Josephine Deaton in 1897 and died Dec 18, 1935.

      These children were the parents of 48 grandchildren for John Wilburn and Nancy and these grandchildren were the parents of 112 great-grandchildren.

      Much of John Wilburn and Nancy's early married years occurred furing the Civil War.So, raising a large family was especially hard when marauding troops were trying to obtain food and supplies by whatever means necessary.John Wilburn once found his oldest daughter Betty (young wife of John Bybee) confronting some of the mauraders at his barn. It is believed that she was pregnant at the time but notwithstanding, she had placed her body against the barn door to hinder the raiders. Instead of shooting Betty, they "shoved" her away from the door. It was at about that time her father came around the corner of his barn to see what was happening. He said to one of his nearby children, "Bring me the gun from the house."One of the soldiers hearing this, took aim at John Wilburn's heart evidently since the bullet clipped one button -- not more-- from John Wilburn's shirt.

      John Wilburn Hash, Sr. died Oct 6, 1896 and Nancy Franks Hash died Sept 10, 1905.They are buried in the Hash Cemetery at Rock Island,TN. Submitted by Bob Roberts, Rt. 1, Box 320, Doyle, TN 38559. Source:Family records and legends."
