      In just over a year, March, 1918 - April, 1919, a great flu epidemic spread worldwide and killed over 22 million people. This is almost three times the number of people killed in World War I. Known as the "Spanish Flu", it took the lives of over 500,000 Americans. More than five times as many as had been killed on the battlefields of France.
