- Elijah was born in Ashe Co., NC, 10 miles south of Jefferson , NC, on the Bever creek road leading to Wilkesboro, NC on the south fork of New Riv er on Nov 3, 1803.
There grown up to manhood he met and married Nancy Suth erland of Johnson Co., TN and they came and settled on the extreme t op of the Blue Ridge Mountains, 4 miles south of his birth place.
There th ey accumulated and entered and added to their home 1300 acres more mounta in land. To this union was born 3 children.
They retained their home as lo ng as each lived. Elijah died Jun 6, 1866.
Nancy Sutherland Callaway was b orn Oct. 24, 1825.
She died Nov 14, 1913.
Then the estate fell in the 3 ch ildren's hands which was divided equally and with good feelings and wi th no cost to anybody.

- Elijah told Lyman Draper that his father was Thomas Callaway, Sr., but members of the family later indicated to Draper that he was a son of Thomas C allaway, Jr.
The story handed down to Callaways in Ashe Co., NC is that El ijah was left on the doorstep of Capt. Thomas Callaway, Jr., born out of w edlock, and the mother could not care for him.
He was apparently rear ed in the home of Capt. Thomas Callaway, Sr.
