      Note:
      We have been unable to find out Margaret Thomas' maiden name. Still looking, June of 2004.

      The birth order of the children is still unknown. The farm was left to George Thomas in the Will of Jacob Thomas, Sr. in 1804, with the stipulation to take care of mother, Margaret. Most times the oldest son was left the farm. We cannot say for sure that George was the oldest from the records we have obtained. If he is the oldest son and his sister Margaret "Numan" was born about 1863 or 1864, this would put the date of birth either before Margaret "Numan" or just after her.

      We can follow mom, Margaret in Blount County Court Records and we learn that there must be some sort of dispute between son George and his mother since we see that Margaret did end up taking George to court over the land. I look at the court records and it strikes me that Margaret lost her husband near the end of May in 1804 since the last will and testament was proven in court on the 28th of May in 1804. Then we see there is a court appearance for George, which leaves a lot of questions in our mind about what it is that George did so soon after his father's death to end up before the courts? As we look further into the court records, it appears that George may not have paid the property taxes or had liens on the farm and the family was just about ready to loose the whole plantation due to debts George had run up so Margaret set in to motion a suit to recover what was hers. Then we see on the 25th of May in 1808, George failed to appear in court and was fined heavily. I think at this time George has taken off from Blount County. And we see next Jacob Thomas getting permission to open a Public House in Maryville. And on March 31, 1810 we see where Jacob Thomas obtains a clear title to the land that Margaret had owned.

      Another Thomas researcher Linda B. Morin - LinLB5@ashlandnet.net who is descended from Henry Thomas b. 1756 contacted me regarding the Warfel/Warfield name found in the above records. Henry Thomas' daughter Margaret Thomas married Adam Warfel/Warfield. Henry Thomas, a Rev War soldier moved his family to Indiana sometime in the early 1800's. He was in Butler Co., Ohio for his daughter's wedding in 1811. We have not been able to prove our relationship to this Henry Thomas, but the fact that Margaret Warfel witnessed a court document for Margaret and her son Jacob Thomas suggests there is some sort of relationship possibly. We wondered if Henry Thomas and our elder Jacob Thomas (died 1804) were brothers?

      Hi Barb

      I really haven't done a lot of research myself on the THOMAS line, especially not in TN :-( I am reading everyone's input with avid interest. In one of your E-mails you said:

      Lucille Whiteturky had her Henry Thomas b. 1756 in Tulpehocken, Berks Co., PA settled in Ripley Co, IN & Rush Co., IN. He married a Mary Unkn. b. 08 Feb 1767, PA died 27 Feb 1858, Rush Co., IN buried Homer Cemetery, Walker Twp., Rush Co., IN. Henry d. 14 Sept 1836, Rush Co., IN.

      Homer Cemetery, Walker Twp., Rush Co., IN is where my Adam WARFIELD and his wife Margaret Mary Ann (Thomas) WARFIELD are buried. That seems like more than just a coincidence. Do you have the family for Henry? I have no idea whether or not my grandmother's research is correct. All I have is a typed page with THOMAS information and no sources. Mind you I am not complaining; at least I have facts to check :-)

      If one followed the German naming pattern, the first son would be named after the husband's father and the second son after the wife's father. So Adam WARFIELD's father should be George WARFIELD and Margaret THOMAS's father should be Henry THOMAS. The third son was John.

      I wonder if there is a Rush Co., IN Will for Henry THOMAS. Even an intestate distribution would mention the married names of Henry's daughters. Hmmmm. Gives me a good direction to pursue.

      Thank you for including me in the loop. I will try to get up to speed quickly.

      Henry Thomas' daughter, Margaret Thomas was born in 1788 and died. May 11, 1863. She married Adam Warfield about 1806-7. Their children were: Elizabeth (b. March 7, 1808); Henry (b. July 19, 1810 ); John ( b.. July 1, 1812); Margaret (b. March, 1815); Susan (b. March 22, 1817) Catherine (b. Oct. 19, 1819); Lavina (b. Oct., 1822 ); James (b. March 8, 1827 ); David (b. 1825); and William (b. July 3, 1830).

      Henry b. 1756, We know he was in TN for 26 years after being discharged from the army in the Rev. War in 1782. One of his daughters was married in Jan. 1810 in Butler Co., OH and he obtained land in Butler county in 1807. So I would assume that he left TN between 1807 and 1810 meaning he must have arrived somewhere in TN between 1782-1784.

      Hi Barb

      My Henry died 18 Sept 1836 in Rush Co., IN. He is on the 1820 and 1830 Ripley Co., IN census along with his son George. There is no way he was still living in TN in 1836. This would indicate to me that my Henry b. 1756 is the brother of old Jacob d. 1804 and not his son. The Henry still in Blount Co., TN would then be Jacob's son. Have you come across any deeds between Henry and anyone after 1836? Another question - If Henry Thomas is living in Blount Co., TN in 1836 where is he on the 1830 census? There are only two Henrys listed in TN in 1830; one is Adam's son Henry M. in Sevier Co. and the other is in Williamson Co. which is across the state.

      Maybe I should order the film for tax records in Blount Co., TN beginning 1836 just to see what THOMAS members are still there.

      Lin

      I read through my information on deeds. There has to be more that I have not seen yet. I did notice that in that 1836 deed transaction where I indicate Margaret is still alive, Henry was granted land by TN that either is the same land Old Jaocb got or near too. I need to figure that out. Get the deeds from Knox. He sold off acreage little by little to some of the Neiman/Newman kids. And to other family. I will get that written up. It does indicate it is still "where I live." But I need to double check dates on that for when he was last there. We will get this sorted.........!!

      Subject: Thank You!

      Hi Barbara

      You are a sweetheart :-) Thank you, thank you! At least I know where in TN I am looking! I was beginning to feel very lost. This is fabulous news!

      I found a reference to Margaret Warfel/Warfield in Blount Co.Court records info where
      Mom, Margaret Thomas sold property to Jacob Thomas and Margaret Warfel/Warfield witnessed.

      We need to address right here my grandmother's genealogy. She made an incorrect jump.
      Martin Thomas was born in 1702 and. died in 1768. He came to America in 1749 and settled in Heidelberg Township where he became a prominent citizen. He was a lieutenant in a company of rangers in the French and Indian War of 1756-7. He moved to Lebanon Town-ship where he died in 1768. He left a wife, Barbara, and seven children. His children were: Philip (b. 1725); Theodorus (b. 1727); Jacob ( b. 1729 ); Henry ( b. 1731 ); Adam ( b. 1733 ); Anna (b. 1735) and Martin ( b. March 15, 1737 ).

      (Linda had sent this little note to me also regarding Martin Thomas - Martin Thomas born c. 1702 married Barbara (the Martin who was a Lt. in the French and Indian War.) Son John Thomas married Ursula and also a son Jacob Thomas that married an Ursula. Then there is information from the LDS Ancestral file that John Thomas' son Jacob Thomas married Lousia Schultz - came to Sullivan Co., TN. We wondered then if it could be possible that my Jacob Thomas who died in Maryville, Blount Co., TN in 1804 could have been married first to Ursula and then remarried Margaret Unknown maiden name?)

      Thoodorus Thomas was born in 1727 in Germany and died in May, 1790 in Lebanon Township. He served in the French and Indian War. He was Overseer of the poor in 1761 and served in other official positions in the town. He married Catherine Bomberger, possibly the daughter of Christian and Marie from Baden, Germany. They had seven children: Theodorus or "Durst" (b. 1759); Martin ( b.1761 ); John ( b. 1763 ); Jacob ( b. 1765 ); Catherine (b. 1767 ); Margaret ( b. Nov. 11, 1769 ); and Marie ( b, 1771 ).

      John Thomas and his family came to Indiana. He was born in 1763 and died in 1795. Some of his children settled in Chemckin, Pennsylvania. His wife was Anna Wolfersburger. Their children were: John, Jacob, Margaret, Barbara, Elizabeth, and Anna.

      John THOMAS (above) did indeed have a daughter named Margaret b.c. 1783. This Margaret is NOT the Margaret (below) who married Adam WARFIELD. The Margaret THOMAS b. 1787 who married Adam WARFIELD is the daughter of Henry THOMAS b. 1756 a Revolutionary soldier. It is this Henry that was in TN for 26 years according to his pension papers. And now you (thank you, thank you) have just proven that this family was indeed in Blount Co., TN.

      Margaret Thomas was born in 1788 and died May 11, 1863. She married Adam Warfield about 1806-7. Their children were: Elizabeth (b. March 7, 1808); Henry (b. July 19, 1810 ); John ( b.. July 1, 1812); Margaret (b. March, 1815); Susan (b. March 22, 1817) Catherine (b. Oct. 19, 1819); Lavina (b. Oct., 1822 ); James (b. March 8, 1827 ); David (b. 1825); and William (b. July 3, 1830). I have found that this couple also had an oldest son named, George.

      Henry THOMAS b. 1756 stated in his pension papers that he was discharged in 1782. His oldest daughter was married in Butler Co., OH in Feb of 1810. So he must have been living in OH by 1810. Henry THOMAS purchased land in Butler Co., OH in 1807 but may not have moved there right away. Sooooo, if Henry were in TN for 26 years he had to have come to TN between 1782-1784. Whether or not he was in Blount Co., TN all of that time, I don't know.

      Thank you again for finding this land transaction. I will put my brain to work again on the THOMAS line :-)

      Subject: This is Great :-)

      Hi Barbara

      Now that you have proved that Adam WARFEL/WARFIELD and his wife Margaret THOMAS were indeed in Blount Co., TN, I need to look for records before 1790 for her father and mother, Henry THOMAS b. 1756 and his wife Mary. They should be somewhere in TN by 1784. They left TN by 1810 because a daughter was married in OH in Feb 1810. And yet there are land transactions after 1810 involving a Henry. Possibly he just sold off his property after leaving, or there are two Henrys based on whether my Henry is the son of Jacob and Margaret or the brother of Jacob.

      Based on the census records stating where the children of Adam WARFEL b. 1778 were born he left TN between 1812 when John was born in TN and 1815 when Margaret was born in OH. Adam is on the Butler Co. OH 1820 census. Adam must have been in TN by 1800-1802 as he married Margaret THOMAS about that time based on the birth date of the oldest son, George. Margaret was sure young, about 15 :-( I know the big picture of the WARFEL family as they all stem from one family in Germany, but not where my Adam fits in yet. They multiplied quickly from the late 1600's and early 1700's in the US.

      My Henry THOMAS was born in Tulpehocken, Berks, PA in 1756. He moved to Northumberland Co., PA where he became a Rev soldier in 1781. He was injured and discharged in 1782, was married after being discharged and moved to TN. Of course the church records for Tulpehocken begin in 1757 but according to an article that I read John Caspar Stoever had records from 1746 - 1756 that included 106 baptisms from Tulpehocken. I will look for John Caspar Stoever's records and see if I can find my Henry. If so that will list his parents. I should be so lucky.

      I also thought that I would look in the Lutheran church records of Northumberland Co., PA for a marriage record for my Henry and see what other THOMAS families lived in that county. I did find a query on GenForum for a George THOMAS who fought in the Rev. War from Northumberland Co., PA. He thought that this George was the father of his ancestor, Isaac THOMAS who went to OH but a different county than mine.

      All very wispy. It just seems to me that the WARFEL family must have known the THOMAS family in PA as it appears that Adam WARFEL is the only WARFEL who came to TN. Why would he come there unless he knew someone who had come previously. I'm wondering if the whole bunch aren't originally from Berks Co., PA. I should check the ships manifests for when the WARFELs came over in the 1730's to see if there are any THOMAS or NEIMAN on board. Just thinking out loud. Chat with you later. Thanks again for your help.

      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      As of June 2004 we still have not determined if Linda's ancestor Henry Thomas born in 1756 is our Jacob Thomas' brother, or a cousin. We do not believe he is the Henry Thomas son of Jacob who died in 1804. We see a Henry Thomas in the early Blount Co., TN court records and deeds, but we do not know if some of this information might pertain to Linda's Henry born 1756 or all of it is pertaining to Jacob's son Henry. We can't be sure which Henry we are seeing in some of the early Blount Co., Tennessee records for sure until after her Henry was known to leave Tennessee around 1809/1810.
      It is possible we are of the Martin Thomas Line from Pennsylvania, but we have not been able to determine this. We do need to learn who Margaret, Jacob's wife was.
