      Biography

      Joseph Bragg was christened on October 1, 1719 in North Farnham Parish, Richmond, Virginia. He was the son of Joseph B. Bragg and Mary Settle (Suttle).

      He married Susannah Dozier about 1740 in Richmond County, Virginia. She was the daughter of Leonard Dozier and Elizabeth Ingo.

      He died 1816 in Sullivan County, Virginia.

      Notes for WILLIAM BRAGG:
      William was in the Revolutionary War and served in the 3rd Virginia Regiment under Lt. Joseph Blackwell, was injured and discharged in 1777. On 28 October 1785 at Fauquier Co., Virginia, William bought 118 acres from Cornelius and Jenny Bussy for 100 pounds. On 22 May 1786 at Fauquier Co., Virginia, William and Ruth Bragg sold 58 acres to Humphrey Arnold for 58 pounds. On 26 November 1787 at Fauquier Co., Virginia, William and Ruth Bragg sold 60 acres to Samuel Porter for 40 pounds. On 25 May 1789 at Fauquier Co., Virginia, Humphrey Arnold sold to William Bragg a negro girl named "Rose" for 5 pounds. The Bill of Sale was witnessed by Reuban Bragg and Ann Bragg. It was recorded on 28 Dec 1789 in Fauquier Co., VA Deed Book 10, Pg. 201.

      When William applied for a Revolutionary War Pension he stated that on 17 May 1819 he lived in Oglethorpe, Georgia, aged 65, in 1821 he lived in Madison County, Georgia aged 66?? with wife aged 60. Widow Ruthy applied 27 June 1844 Madison County, Georgia aged 84, stated they were married in March 1778 and he that he died in 1834. Children were; Gorge b. 9 April 1779 & died 26 September 1787, William Jr. b. 12 April 1781, 1 child (name illegible) b. 4 November 1783, Joseph b. 3 July 1786, 2 or 3 children whose names and birth dates were illegible, George Dozzer Bragg b. 10 March 1793, Ruthey b. 24 September 1795, 2 more children whose names & birth dates were illegible, and Humphrey A. Bragg b. in 1802, widow d. 30 November 1844 leaving children; Joseph, Nancy Ballinger, George, Susannah Berryman and Humphrey A. Bragg.

      4. Joseph3 Bragg (Joseph2, Joseph1) was born on 1 October 1719 at Richmond Co., Virginia.3 He married Susannah Dozier, daughter of Leonard Dozier II and Elizabeth Ingo, at Richmond Co., Virginia.

      On 12 May 1740 at Richmond Co., Virginia, Court Records showed that "The claim of Joseph Bragg of this County for taking up a servant woman named Wilnor Gorman belonging to Stanley Gower of this county was this day sworn to in Court by the sd' Bragg and ordered to be certified."14

      On 10 February 1746 at Stafford Co., Virginia, Joseph and Susannah witnessed a Will for Mary Burras.

      Susannah Dozier was born after 1702.

      5. Thomas3 Bragg Sr. (Joseph2, Joseph1) was born on 7 February 1721 at Richmond Co., Virginia.3 He married Elizabeth McKay on 22 May 1753 at Augusta Co., Virginia.

      On 20 February 1786 at Sullivan Co., Tennessee, Thomas Bragg received from James Hollis through his attorney, 420 acres on Horse Creek, recorded on 28 Aug 1806.

      On 27 July 1790 at Sullivan Co., Tennessee, Thomas Bragg Sr. bought from Larkin Pearpoint 80 acres on Horse Creek, and was recorded on 7 oct 1790.31

      On 25 September 1790 at Sullivan Co., Tennessee, Thomas Bragg bought from John Mullin Sr., 50 acres on Horse Creek and it was recorded on 20 Jul 1791.32

      On 5 November 1793 at Sullivan Co., Tennessee, Thomas Bragg Sr., for the good will & love he bears for his said son, David, for 5 shillings sterling, gave him 100 acres in Sullivan Co., on Walkers Fork of Horse Creek including the plantation where Larkin Learpoint formerly lived. Witnessed by George and Thomas Vincent. Proven in open court by George Vincent, December session 1793. Recorded 20 Sep 1794.33

      On 16 October 1801 at Sullivan Co., Tennessee, it looks as if Thomas Sr., divided his 200 acres of land between his four sons, Thomas Jr., William, Joseph and Benjamin and Thomas Jr. had been made executor of the Estate. This was registered on May 26, 1802.

      The sons, Joseph, William and Benjamin transferred their share of land, 150 acres on Horse Creek each, to Thomas Jr. on 9 Mar 1816.34
