Notes |
- Note: I visited Bermuda in September of 1997. The trip was planned for leisure, however, could not resist visiting the archives in Hamilton to research the DURHAM line. I photo-copied several documents, most of which were already in my possession. Returned home and promptly misplaced the file. In January of 2001, staff rearranged the office and uncovered the misplaced file, "Bermuda Trip".
I was delighted to rediscover the documents and immediately proceeded to abstract these references to amplify existing research. Document after document reiterated the existing research. I added only a jot and tittle to what was already known. One knows how numbing repetitive journal entries can be. After many sources checked and cross-checked and with nothing much new and was glad finally to come to the last reference...
Excerpted from, "A Calendar of Early Bermuda Deeds and other entries in Bermuda Colonial Records",Volume 5A, 1618-1680,edited by Peter D. Garrod, M.A.,Bermudan Archives,p. 63,abstracted by David A. Hennessee:
"164 29 June 1671 [Bermuda]
Agreement between Richard Hunt of Southampton Tribe and his wife Frances, on the one hand , and Henry Durham of Southampton on the other. Whereas Richard and Frances received six shares of land from Edward [Montague], Earl of Manchester, according to the will of Sir Nathaniell Rich, who left the property to the Earl in trust for the most deserving children of his sister Jane and her husband Thomas Grynsdich, gentleman, of whom Frances is the eldest daughter; and whereas Durham has married Judeth, the Hunts' daughter; it is agreed [1] that Durham shall continue to enjoy the land in his posession for the rest of Richard's life, provided that he uses no timber except what he is permitted to use for building and other necessities; and [2] that after Richard's death Durham and his wife shall have 18 acres of Richard's easternmonst land, abutting eastward on two shares in the posession of Durham and Elizabeth Durham, widow, westward on other land of Richard, northward on the land of Robert Travers, and southward on the sea/ All "mines & mineralls and other royalties" are reserved.
