Biography
Mary Durham was baptized June 5, 1686 at North Farnham Parish, Old Rappahannock County, Virginia.[1][2] Her parents were Thomas Durham and Dorothy Durham. Her baptism was recorded at North Farnham Parish Church.[3]
Mary is named in the will of her father, Thomas Durham, dated 4 August 1711 and proved in court 1 June 1715 in Richmond County, Virginia. Her son, Thomas, is also named as "my grandson Thomas Dodson.…"[4]
On August 29, 1701, Dorothy-Mary Durham married Thomas Dodson in Richmond County, Virginia.[1] The couple had nine children, all born in Richmond County, in the English colony of Virginia:[3]
George Dodson b Oct 31, 1702, d 1770; mar Margaret Dagord
David Dodson b ca 1704, d ca 1740); mar Amy
Thomas Dodson b ca 1707, d October 21, 1783:mar 1) Elizabeth Rose, 2) Ellenor Sloan
Greenham Dodson b ca 1709, d after 1777; mar Elinore Hightower
Alice Dodson b 1711, d after 1730; mar William Creel
Mary Dodson b Oct 5, 1715, d after 1739; mar Mr. Oldham
Abraham Dodson b April 4, 1723, d ca 1768; mar Barbara Russell?
Joshua Dodson b May 25, 1725, d ca 1793; mar Ruth LNU
Elisha Dodson b February 22, 1727, d after 1780; mar Sarah Everett
Mary and her son Greenham Dodson were named the executors in the Will of Thomas Dodson dated 17 February, 1739. He died on November 21, 1740, a date some family genealogies have "adopted" as Mary's death date by mistake.
On September 29, 1743, nearly 3 years after Thomas Dodson's death, his widow, Mary (Durham) Dodson, married local planter Robert Galbreath. There were apparently issues with the marriage as her son, Greenham Dodson, filed suit in Chancery Court in Richmond Co., Virginia, in 1744. The court ruled in 1745 as follows:
" . . . Complainant Greenham Dodson to take possession of the estate for the use of his mother, Mary Galbreath, during her coverture according to the intention of the Testators Will, the said Robert Galbreath in open court refusing to give security . . ."[5]
Mary Durham Dodson died sometime after 1745, in Richmond Co., Virginia. Her exact date of death is not known as local records were destroyed before the 20th Century. Estimates have ranged from 1745 to 1775. [6]
