Comments (John Hale b. 0___ 1726 Bedford County, Virginia d. 0___ 1785 Orange County, North Carolina) [editor's note; go to: http://thehennesseefamily.com/getperson.php?personID=I31312&tree=hennessee]:

David, In my research I am coming to believe that Thomas Rowe Hale's father was Benjamin Hale and not John Hale (who) married to Mary Underhill.

This belief is based on DNA from several descendants of Thomas Rowe Hale.

The Haplogroup is different for John Hale than the descendants of Thomas Rowe Hale and Benjamin Hale is showing up in the same Haplogroup.

John Hale Descendants are in a different Haplogroup.

I have been in communication with several of the DNA contributors on the Hale Project with FTDNA.Com and there is a growing concensus that Thomas Hale's father was Benjamin Hale who was Son of Thomas Hale out of York Pennsylvania in Warrington Township.

Have you done any research on the Hale family out of York PA? There has to be a connection to the Hale's of Baltimore but I have not found it yet.

What do you know here and what is your opinion.

PS. You and I spoke a while ago. I am from Boynton Beach Fla and you live in West Palm.

Benjamin Hale is listed on the 1786 Franklin County VA Composite Tax List, Real & Personal indicating that he was living in what was to become Franklin Co before it was created as a county in 1786. The only Hales on this 1786 Tax List of Franklin Co were: Benjamin, Elizabeth, John,Joseph, Pearson and Thomas.

Benjamin Hale, Sr. listed as paying his personal property taxes in Franklin Co VA in the years 1787-88-89-90-92-98 (with two white males over 16 in 1792). The PP tax records identifies John Hale as “Bin's son.” This John Hale son of Benjamin was found on PP tax records in the years 1797-98 only but was surety on Franklin Co marriage bonds as late as 1814 and as a witness to the will of his father-in-lawJohn Utley Wade in 1824 (not sure why I missed him on the PP tax records). In addition the tax record identifies our Thomas Hale as “Bin's son” and Thomas is listed on PP tax records in the years 1804-05-06-07-09-12-13-15-16-18-19.

The following is an annotated list of the children of Thomas Hale of Warrington Township York Co PA with the children listed in the order they appeared in Thomas' LWT.

Thomas Hale b c1700 d 1761 Warrington York Co PA
Children in order listed in LWT [WKH: rough estimates of birth dates assuming Thomas' LWT listed the sons and daughters in order of birth and assuming 2 years between births with 1748 marriage of Sara as a base]:

      1. John Hale b c1725 [WKH: probably explored Halifax Co VA and entered land there as early as 1755 and had left PA for good by 1768--see Richard Hale's estate administration papers.]

      2. Sarah (Hale) Buffenton b c1727 [WKH: Sarah Hale m Thomas Buffington 1748; Source: In the LDS site, there is a listing for a marriage of Sarah Hale and Thomas Buffington accounced at the Kennett Monthly Meeting of Quakers on September 17, 1748. These records are housed at Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, and they will do searches if you request. Source: http://genforum.genealogy.com/buffington/messages/1141.html]http://genforum.genealogy.com/buffington/messages/1141.html]

      3. Joseph Hale b 1729 [WKH: probably explored Halifax Co VA and entered land there on 17 Feb 1763.]

      4. Benjamin Hale b 1731 [WKH: Might this be the Benjamin Hayle found in both the 1769 Tax List and Census of Dobbs Co NC? And who bought and sold land in Edgecombe and ]

      5. William Hale b 1733 [WKH: probably explored Halifax Co VA and entered land there in 1762 and had left PA for good by 1768--see Richard Hale's estate administration papers. Might this be the William Hale who on April 3rd 1779 was shot and wounded by Indians near Muncy's on Walker Creek but managed to make his way to the New River residence of a Shannon family who lived near the Big Crossing of New River? Source: Letter from Col William Preston to Capt William Robinson on pages 275 and 276 of Frontier Advance on the Upper Ohio, 1778-1779, Edited By Louise Phelps Kellogg.]

      6. Mary (Hale) Prunty b 1735 [WKH: Mary m 19 May 1760 York Co PA in Christ Lutheran Church to Thomas Prunty s/o Brian(?) Prunty; Thomas and Mary appear to have moved to Pigg River in Henry/Franklin Co by 18 May 1778.]

      7. Hannah (Hale) b 1737 m --?-- Biggs

      8. Ann Hale b1739

      9. Richard Hale b 1741 (received 20 acres of his father's property) died prior to June 1767 when his Pittsylvania Co VA estate administration was initiated by his brother William in June 1767; his York Co PA estate was administered by Thomas Prunty 10 May 1768 [WKH: Richard probably explored Halifax/Pittsylvania Co VA and entered land there in 1765 and may have died there shortly before June 1767.]

      10. Elizabeth Hale b 1743

      11. Thomas Hale b c1745 [WKH: I think this Thomas was b 1742 d 1812 s and is the one who married Jane Armstrong. And after his father died in 1761 that he joined his older brother Benjamin in NC, then the two brothers moved to Pigg River about the same time c1778.Might this be the Thomas Hayle found in both the 1769 Tax List and 1769 Census of Dobbs Co NC? If Thomas was in fact born c1742, then probably not given that the 1769 tax record listed Thomas with a son presumed to be 16 years or older indicating he was born before c1732. The Thomas Hale who married Agnes Price was bornc1755 died 1802 and m 1780 and I think he was the son of one of the older sons of Thomas Hale (d 1761 York Co PA) probably John or William.
However note that some believe that the Thomas Hale who married Jane Armstrong was b 19 Oct 1742 son of Henry Hale b 25 Mar 1721 (m 10 Sep 1721 Mary Bradley) s/o Nicholas & Frances Hale of Baltimore MD. 12. Edward Hale b c1747 [WKH: I think this is the Edward who on 26 Sep 1786 “late of Lunenburg” married Martha Purdew. After his father died in 1761 he may have joined his older brother Benjamin in NC too. If so he would be the Edward Hayle found in both the 1769 Tax List and 1769 Census of Dobbs Co NC.]
