I am looking for information on John SHERMAN or SHEARMAN (d. 1795, Caswell Co., NC) and family. His wife was Mildred, and children included Temperance (m. William WALLIS, Sr. 26 Jul 1795 in Caswell Co.), Elizabeth (m. John BURCH 12 Apr 1791 in Caswell Co.), and Catherine (m. William THOMPSON, Sr. abt. 1810). I would like to know if Thomas SHEARMAN (m. Sarah BURCH 11 Dec. 1800 in Caswell Co.) was the son of John. The families of Thomas, Temperance, and Elizabeth moved to Russell Co., VA between 1800 and 1810, and then they moved to Claiborne Co., TN. Catherine's family was in Claiborne Co., TN by 1830.

      BURCH, SHEARMAN

I'm also working on these families. Mildred Shearman also accompanied some of her children to Russell Co., Va. and appears in the personal property tax list for 1797. A Jacob and William Burch, as well as John Burch, appear in that same period in Russell and all had come from Caswell Co., N.C., of course. It appears that William and John both went to Claiborne Co., Tn. I don't know what happened to Jacob. I have long assumed, with no evidence, that Thomas must have been the son of John and Mildred Shearman. And I strongly suspect his wife, Sarah Burch, was a sister of John Burch who married Elizabeth Shearman. When Thomas and Sarah Shearman married, Jacob Burch was a bondsman or witness, and Jacob also accompanied the family to Russell Co. I have not proven parentage for John Burch and his probable siblings, but it is interesting that Pemberton Burch of Caswell Co was the Administrator of the estate of John Shearman. Also, Pemberton Burch, though he did not seem to migrate to Russell Co., Va., owned land there which he sold in 1799. I have not been able to find his purchase of that land. Pemberton was a generation older than John, Jacob, William, etc., so it is worth pursueing leads regarding his family or heirs. He died in 1803 in Caswell Co. [3]
