  • Notes
    • Jethro Osheal aka O'Sheal, O'Sheals, and O'Shields was the son of Daniel Osheal and Sarah Walker. Jethro O'Sheal served in the Revolutionary War as a private under General Morgan and fought at Cowpens.

Jethro was married twice, and by his first wife Elizabeth he was the father of Elizabeth Apsley Osheal, wife of Rev James Hewitt, both who removed to Gordon County, Georgia. According to family records as well as the records of Friendship Baptist Church and their compiler Judy McHam Davis, Jethro's wife listed in the minutes named Sarah O'Shields separated from her husband.

Elizabeth was the wife of the Revolutionary War soldier Jethro O'Sheal. Her name in some records also appears to have been Elizabeth Catherine O;Sheal. The Friendship Baptist Church records show that Jethro Oshields was received by experience and baptism on Saturday before the first Lords day in August 1803...and the records state, "In church conference Sat before the first Lords day in October 1804...Elizabeth Oshields by experience and baptism." Authorities of the church record and family history have identified this Elizabeth as Jethro's wife, and it is further supported by the name Elizabeth O'Sheal appearing in court records which infer by the testimonies that Elizabeth O'Sheal is the wife of Jethro. Family records also state this. The surname had several variant spellings including O'Sheals, Osheal, O'Shealds, O'Shiel, and of course Jethro O'Shields. It is known that Elizabeth was the mother of Jethro's children. No children are known to be born to Sarah O'Shields who was his second wife. It was Sarah O'Shields, who in 1840 the church record stated that she had left her husband J Oshields, asked to be separated from him. In the Oct 1841 minutes of the Friendship Baptist Church Records, Bro. James Huatte (ie James Hewett, James Hewitt, James Huate, etc) granted Sarah O'Shields a letter of dismission from the church. It is clear that it was the Sarah O'Shields who was the wife of Jethro or J O'Shields (with records pointing back to Jethro) according to Judy McHam Davis, the compiler of the records and an O'Shields descendant.

An incorrect reference for Jethro O'Shields is the History of Walnut Grove, which lists his daughter Elizabeth as marrying Tyree Harrison, when in fact it was his niece. Jethro and Elizabeth O'Sheal's daughter Elizabeth married Rev. James Hewitt. The name Lucretia Wooten O'Shields is a fictional name, derived from Lucretia (name of bro John's wife) and Wooten (the father of the children of Teresa O'Sheal who was the mother of Elizabeth O'Sheals alias Wooten, wife of Tyree Harrison).

A History of Walnut Grove gives incorrect information on Jethro O'Shields, aka Osheal, O'Sheal, etc.

(NOTE the fictional personage Lucretia Wooten was not the wife of Jethro)

info on his burial comes from a plat of O'Shields interments by informant of 19th century.
