    • Good morning david, I don't have very much information on this side of my family. Here goes with what I do have. Clarence Land married Clara B. Bottom. Clarence would have been my grandmother's brother. My grandmother was Ina Ruth Land Orvis. Their father was William Henry Land who married Laura Clark. Laura's mother's name was Minerva Unknown maiden name Clark she was married to Jonathan Clark. Minerva's parents were unknown Johnston who was married to a Cherokee. On Clara's side I have her parents listed as Sally Anne Hennessee daughter of Thomas Carl Hennessee and Levira Bagley.

Sally Anne married John Wellington Bottom who was the son of George washington Bottom and Matilda Hale.

That is all I have and it was given to me by a cousin of my mother's who is now deceased. I would be interested in any and all information you may have.

I would very much like to be able to find these ancestors. i would like to be able to prove the indian heritage. Not for financial reasons just to be able to put some things into perspective. I carry the features of the cherokee ..ie high cheek bones and dark skin. It seems the older I get the more prominent the features appear. Supposedly the Cherokee woman was taken off of a reservation,,,, stolen by the Unknown Johnston. Of course during this time it was unfashionable and deadly to claim the indian heritage, so I am sure that her heritage was covered up and concealed. I would very much like to see what you have and hopefully I can fill in some gaps in the family tree.

I have an extensive file on the Orvis's. I am descended from Ina Ruth Land Orvis and Otis Everett Orvis. They had 7 children. My mother was the 4th child. I would be happy to pass on any Orvis info . Thank you for replying so quickly. Hope to hear from you again.. Rebekah

Have bolded divergent data re middle names & cited ancestors of this BOTTOM line offered by Rebekah.
Have searched for this family’s possible relationship to the BOTTOMS of Warren Co.,TN to no avail. Cannot help but feel that there may in fact be a link…DAH

Back again. I would bet money on Cain, but proof? My Bottoms, the first time I can accurately track them started around 1800 in Roane County, Tennessee. Now I haven't researched the county boundary lines and I know they changed somewhat, but both father and son ended up in Hamilton County, TN.(Chattanooga area) At this time they no longer owned slaves and a good number of family members migrated to Missouri before 1860. My Bottoms were in Dallas County, Missouri, and this is where they died. Matilda Bottoms died from the complications of diabetes, and George Washington from Parrie,

My GGrandmother was orphaned and she went to live with her brother in Lawrence Co. Arkansas. Several of the Bottoms had moved to Lawrence County,AR.

This is the obituary of G W Bottoms.

Hello Cuz. Thanks for the update. I appreciate your good work. Keep thinking that the BOTTOM family is conncected as it really is not a common name. Too many coincendences in terms of inter-marriage with many Warren County,TN families. Thomas' middle-name was probably CAIN. Doubt that is was CARL as there are no such Christian names on either side of his family.

      Thanks again...David

William Halcum passed away in Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama August 17, 1959. He was buried at Elmwood Cemetery August 19th. Nelle Hennessee Halcum died April 28, 1995 in Elgin, Bastrop Co., Texas. Her remains were cremated and her ashes scattered in Walnut Ridge, Lawrence Co., Arkansas at Hope Cemetery. A memorial stone has been placed there in her honor.

I have information on the Bottom's family if you would like to have it. I read the file you sent to me and I would agree that my direct line back to the original Thomas Bottoms did not go to Warren County, Tennessee where all the Wilchers lived. Now Thomas Bottom, of Roane County, TN, may have had other sons that did in fact travel to Warren County. I do not have knowledge of other sons. Thomas and his son Allen, father of George Washington, did appear to live close to each other. They were both in Hamilton County in the 1850 census.

By 1860 Allen and others had removed to Missouri. Thomas was not to be found in any census records. Allen was married to Margaret Gardenhire and I have a copy of their marriage record. The Gardenhire family is often mentioned in Hamilton County and Roane County, Tennessee historical records. You can find them mentioned on the county genealogy sites, and there is a lot of information at the Tennessee State Archives. Margaret's father, William C. Gardenhire, settled first at what is now Chatanooga near Ross's Landing.

Part of his original holdings are now Oak Ridge. His son's home would be right in the middle of downtown Chatanooga and family graves were among the first to be buried there. If you like I will send you that line. Just let me know.

      Question?

I did not know Thomas Hennessee's middle name was Carl. I had assumed it was Cain.

His biography in Goodspeed's only provided his middle initial.

      Military History: Confederate

Battles: Poison Springs - Marks's Mill - Jenkins' Ferry

      - Wounded

      - Prisoner of War

      - 10 May, 1865. Paroled at Shrevesport, LA

      - He was one of 74 out of the 476 men of his battalion that survived the war.

Source: Goodspeed's History of NE Arkansas

I will try to obtain a copy of his enlistment papers, but I do not think they give his middle initial.

David, Just returned home from short trip and have both messages. I have downloaded the 3 files, and briefly scanned the first. I think you keep updates on related families so let me pass on this information. My mother's name was Laura Nelle (I think I misspelled this when I sent it to you). My father was Neil Harry Hanson. He died last year, 17 March, 2002 in Traverse City, Michigan. His obituary was on line in the Traverse City Record the last time I looked.

My grandmother, Nell Hennessee Halcum was married to William McKinley Halcum. Someone had listed him as working for the railroad, but for most of his life he was a bookkeeper for the coal mines in Walker County, Alabama. Although his formal educational opportunities were limited, he was well read in the classics and I still have his copy of Paradise Lost which he had me read in my early teens.

Going back to the wife of Thomas Hennessee.

Lavira Bagley's parents, Joseph Bagley and Annie Gibson were married in Jacksonport, Arkansas. I found this in a marriage record book and have the source in some notebooks that I need to go back and find. When I started researching last year there was so much I didn't know and I made many mistakes. I will get to all three files by Wednesday and will get back in touch then if I do not have to go out of town again. I am eager to sit down and study these.

How long have you been researching the Hennessee line?

      Have a good week.

      Paula

David, Just a quick note to see if this e-mail goes through. Do you have any information on Sally Wilcher's line? I have Nancy Anna Walton as the mother and William Walton as her grandfather, but nothing verified. I know you keep a lot of data on this family. My line came down through her to Warren County, Tennessee and then they moved west. It went Thomas, Gideon C, Thomas (went to Arkansas) and Joseph Gideon (married Parrie Bottoms), Nelle Hennessee Halcum, Laura Halcum Hanson, to me, Paula Hanson Brentnall. [2]
