- LAWTON, Okla._A portion of State Highway 58 was dedicated to a Lawton business icon.
Until her death in 2011, Edna Hennessee spent more than 60 years pioneering home beauty products. In 1973, she started her own business in Lawton where she worked to bring products like aloe vera based cosmetics to the public. She was memorialized with her own piece of highway close to her family's heart.
Edna Hennessee lived on that stretch of State Highway 58 for the last 30 years of her life and traveled the highway countless times. She paved the way for women in the business world with her products, now being sold across the U.S. and in more than 40 countries. After her death in 2011, Hennessee's business has continued to grow. The Edna Hennessee Memorial Highway is just another way to continue her legacy.
"Having Highway 58 go past the housing development that she envisioned, and to see it so beautiful now and the town thriving was the perfect location,” said Jennifer Ellis, Edna's granddaughter.
State Representative Don Armes authored House Bill 1759 which made Wednesday's highway dedication possible.
"It was my last year in the legislature so I decided if we are going to do it, we better get busy so we found a bill, basically a legislative vehicle, that we could put this language in that would honor Edna Hennessee," explained Armes.
Edna HenneHennesseeonly drove Highway 58 to work, she also lived in Medicine Park for more than 30 years. This town is where she lived, raised a family and is now also home to her family.
"My grandmother's home was out here. She loved the town of Medicine Park. She invested lots of time and money into Medicine Park, which Cosmetic Specialty Labs continues to do," explained Ellis.
Every time someone drives down this stretch of Highway 58, the family hopes people will see the sign and forever think of Edna.
"Immediately know who I am talking about. So many of them I can never begin to count that says, “Oh she was my best friend,” and she was. She was a best friend to lots and lots of people because she was good to lots and lots of people," said Wanda Sue McNair, Edna's sister.
These miles that bare Edna's name are now a part of Medicine Park.
